According to a press release from Tucumcari Public Schools, the free lunch program will end as of Dec. 21. The schools met the program’s poverty guidelines but only 54.3 percent of students participated in the program.

T.J. Riddle, administrative assistant for Tucumcari Public Schools, said the schools needed at least 85 percent student participation to make the free lunch program viable.
“For us to be able to stay afloat we needed 85 percent participation said Riddle, “Otherwise we would lose money.”
On Jan. 3, 2005, lunches will go back to regular, reduced and free lunches only for those who qualify. Local schools will still offer free daily breakfasts to all students.
