The Logan High School boys basketball team beat Tucumcari 73-55 Saturday. The Rattlers stayed close most of the way, but the Longhorns gradually pulled away late in the game.
Rattler Coach John Span said it was a battle of two evenly-matched teams. “Logan got a lot of breaks, but they created the breaks,” said Span. “Logan did a little better at executing than we did.”
Logan’s Jake Abercrombie used his height and talent to score a game-high 25 points. He, along with Saul Acosta and Marshall Graham, provided solid protection around the basket. Longhorn Coach Billy Burns said he didn’t think Logan’s height was all that important in the win. “When Tucumcari had Chris McCasland and Robert Munoz in the game, you could say that they had a height advantage over us,” said Burns. “I’m glad that our post players played so well tonight.”
Robert Munoz was Tucumcari’s leading scorer with 21 points. He hit well from near the basket and he had a good outside jumper. He added needed power down low to a team that has great quickness. Tucumcari’s Nemi Salvador and Jeremy Lopez handled the ball well bringing it down the court, but Logan matched Tucumcari in every respect as Josh Franco, J.D. Estrada and Wes James handled the ball equally well.
Tucumcari got as close as 27-26 late in the second quarter when Jeremy Lopez hit a three, but Logan’s Acosta responded with two baskets in the final minute of the half as Logan went up by seven. In the second half Tucumcari pulled within striking distance a number of times, but Logan always had an answer. Midway through the final period, McCasland brought the Rattlers within nine, but Josh Franco responded with a three-pointer and then another bucket. Another minute went off the clock before Tucumcari scored again.
The 18-point victory margin was deceptive according to both coaches. “If we played each other tomorrow night, we might win,” said Span. “I’d have to agree with Coach Span,” said Coach Burns. “These are two good teams.”
