A fatal one-vehicle pickup accident took the life of a 17-year-old girl early Thursday morning roughly 50 miles northeast of Tucumcari near milepost 347 near the town of Nara Visa. Four others were injured in the accident.
According to investigating New Mexico State Police Officer Paul Bell, at approximately 1:36 a.m. Thursday, a 1998 green Dodge crew-cab pickup was traveling westbound on US Highway 54 during a heavy snowstorm.
It was at this point Bell said the driver of the vehicle Jorge A. Cabada-Lopez, 40, said he lost control of the vehicle.
“He stated that he felt the tires hit a slippery spot on the roadway,” said Bell.
Bell said the pickup left the roadway towards the north side of the road and then went into a counter-clockwise spin and finally overturned 1 3/4 times. He said it came to rest on the driver’s side facing west. “None of the occupants were ejected from the vehicle,” said Bell, “but one passenger, Maira A. Talamantes, was pined inside the wreckage.”
Bell said Talamantes later was pronounced dead at the scene by deputy medical investigator Charles Dunn at approximately 3:18 a.m.
Also injured in the accident were Lidia A. Bustillos, 36, Roxanne Talamantes, 14, and Jose Talamantes, Jr, 8.
Only the driver was listed as uninjured.
