In a tightly contested game, the Tucumcari Rattlers got their biggest lead of the game late in the fourth quarter to win 57-48 against Monte Del Sol in Santa Rosa.. The Dragons led at the beginning of the final period 38-37. The Rattlers relied on three-point shooting, hitting ten three pointers in the game.
It was close for a good part the game and was looking to be that way until the very end, but Jeremy Lopez, Gabriel Anaya and Matt Braziel each hit three pointers in the final period to frustrate the Dragons. “We had trouble getting started but once we did we did OK,” said Tucumcari Coach John Span.
The Rattlers did a little better in the free throw department hitting 58 percent. Tucumcari’s ability to hit the three helped negate the team’s ten turnovers.
The Rattlers were up 13-11 to begin the second quarter, but with Nathan McDonald, Chris McCasland and Braziel resting on the bench, Monte Del Sol went ahead 20-13.
It was not until McCasland tied the game at 33-33 with a three late in the third quarter that Tucumcari was back solidly in the game. Each team traded leads until late in the game.
Lopez and Braziel each scored 14 points mainly off three pointers. Anaya and Robert Munoz each finished with 8 and McCasland and McDonald each had 6.
“It wasn’t pretty,” said Span, “but it was a win and we’ll take it.”
The Rattlers play either Cimarron or Penasco today (Saturday) at 4:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on KTNM radio.
