The Tucumcari High School girls basketball team dominated To’hajiilee 52-13 Sunday at Sandia Prep. Tucumcari outscored its opponent in every quarter but the third enroute to its most lopsided win of the season.
Now 6-5 on the season, the Tucumcari girls still have a shot at a winning season.
Head Coach Alicia Trujillo said if her team can play together, then it has the ability to beat most anybody.
“We were up 30-7 at the half,” Trujillo said. “We pushed the ball well and we played a lot of man-to-man and had a lot of steals off the full-court press.”
The problem with Tucumcari this season has been consistency. Tucumcari lost to Pecos 55-26 on Friday.
“We should have never lost that game,” Trujillo said. “We did like we did last year. When we got behind we started making turnovers. We panicked. In Sunday’s game we played like we should have played Friday.”
Jana Kirksey returned to the lineup last weekend after being out with a lingering knee problem. She contributed four points to Sunday’s victory. Coach Trujillo said Kirksey is still a little rusty but should make consistent improvement.
Jamie Jones scored 19 points and made the Sandia Prep Invite all-tournament team.
Next up for the Lady Rattlers is Fort Sumner, a team that beat Tucumcari by 25 at the beginning of the season. Varsity play follows two junior varsity games. The girls’ varsity game should begin about 6 p.m.
