San Jon beats Floyd in tight contest

The San Jon High School boys basketball team finished a tournament in Texico Saturday with a 65-64 win over Floyd. The Broncos were hitting threes with abandon but it was a three-pointer by San Jon’s Richard Vasquez at the end of the game that won it for the Coyotes.

San Jon opened up an 8-0 lead on the Broncos with Danny Shetter, Jared Archuleta, Vasquez and Trey Rusk each getting some points. Floyd closed in by the start of the second quarter, down by just one point.

During one stretch before the half, Floyd managed three three-pointers in a row and went up by six points at the half. Floyd would have been up by nine but Jason Bell stole the ball with seconds left and then fired in a three-pointer.
The Broncos continued to hit threes in the second half, usually when the Coyotes were about to come back.
San Jon did not make a serious run at Floyd until the beginning at the fourth quarter.

Rusk, Archuleta and Vasquez each hit shots to begin the final period as San Jon closed to within three points of the Broncos. With about three minutes left in the game Shetter hit two shots in a row and San Jon was down by just one point.

Floyd hit another three to make it 64-60 and with a minute left in the game Floyd was in control.
Archuleta hit a bucket with 30 seconds left but then all the Broncos had to do was stall.
Danny Shetter stole the ball on Floyd’s end of the court with just seven seconds left in the game.
He fired to Vasquez whose three-point shot fell through the net as the buzzer sounded.

Archuleta was San Jon’s high scorer with 17 points. Vasquez added 13. Shetter and Rusk added ten apiece.
San Jon won the EPAC tournament consolation trophy.
