A Santa Rosa construction worker died Jan. 6 near Tucumcari on U.S. Interstate 40 while he was involved in painting stripes on the highway between Santa Rosa and Tucumcari.
Chris Marquez was driving a vehicle owned by San Bar Construction, the middle vehicle of three involved with the striping of the highway, about 1:30 p.m., according to state police reports.
A semitruck driven by Patrick Blandford of Rancho Cordova, Calif., passed the trailing vehicle, which was carrying signal equipment warning of the stripe painting crew, police said.
Blandford’s truck then hit the truck driven by Marquez and caused it to go off the highway and into the median of the highway. The San Bar Construction vehicle then rolled onto its top.
Marquez died at the scene.
State police officers said the accident is still under investigation.
