The Tucumcari High School girls basketball team suffered its worst loss of the season Thursday, falling to the Vixens of Fort Sumner, 56-15. The Lady Rattlers’ inability to solve Fort Sumner’s full-court press spelled doom early as Tucumcari ball handlers rarely got the ball past mid-court without giving it away.
Fort Sumner beat Tucumcari earlier in the season by 25 points at Fort Sumner, but the Lady Rattlers had managed to win six games since then.
Jamie Jones, Tucumcari’s high scorer with 7 points, said she and her teammates may not have given Fort Sumner the respect due as the game began.
“I think we came in thinking that we would do really well since we’ve won some games. We thought we’d do a lot better than the last time we played them,” she said. “It seemed like we weren’t really trying hard. We didn’t really try our hardest until the last quarter.”
In recent games the Tucumcari players were vocal as they pushed the ball down the court, but Thursday against Fort Sumner, they were quieter. The ball handlers were not yelling instructions to teammates and players were not calling for the ball like they have in recent games.
Lady Rattler Amanda Tapia hit a bucket early in the game and that was the lone basket until late in the second quarter. Tucumcari was down 37-5 at the half.
The Lady Rattlers also played at Santa Rosa on Friday night and they’re scheduled to host Raton about 6 tonight.
