The Tucumcari High School wrestling team recently finished fifth at a tournament in Albuquerque. Several Tucumcari wrestlers placed well against competition from big schools that included Albuquerque High School, Bernalillo High School and Highland High School.
Coach Eddie Encinias said Brian Lopez is undefeated this season and heavyweight Justin Garcia pinned three opponents to take first place in the heavyweight class.
“Brian Lopez decisioned one opponent and pinned two others to take the 189-pound class,” Encinias said.”Jacob Ramirez was third in the 112-pound class. He’s just an eighth-grader.”
Encinias said his wrestlers are hungry for tough competition.
“Sometimes we get our tails kicked, but our guys like to take on the bigger high schools,” he said.
Encinias said part of the reason for the fifth-place finish at the tournament was due to the absence of Michael Baca, Albert Naverro and Wesley Martinez, all out with illnesses.
“Our guys are wrestling well right now, but they know they can do better,” Encinias said
