A floor plan was approved by Mesalands Community College Board of Trustees last week for the addition to Building A. John Yearout, director of public relations said the next step is the “development of the complete set of blue prints, followed by additional approvals and an invitation for contractors to bid on the job.”
“We’re still in the early stages of planning,” Yearout said. Floor plans show the addition to allow for a large room with dividers to use for conferences and other events. “This room will hold 250 people,” he said. “This has been the college’s weakest link. We haven’t been able to hold large events at the college. We’ve had to go somewhere else.”
The fitness center will also be moved into the new building addition and upgraded. It will now have a locker area. The automotive technology department will be moved from Building A to Building C and upgraded as well, Yearout said. He said the facility’s addition will also house bigger restrooms and offices.
A press release from Mesalands said the automotive facility change will allow for more efficient use of space and prove beneficial for the program because “it will initiate a review of all of the automotive equipment and identify items that are no longer cutting-edge technology.”
“We hope that work on the new addition can start as early as this summer,” said Phillip O. Barry, college president.
Yearout said the college hasn’t experienced any improvements in quite some time. “This project has really got everyone on high,” he said.
