The Tucumcari High School basketball team hung tough for two quarters at Clayton Friday, but the Lady Yellow Jackets pulled away in the second half enroute to a 69-39 victory. It was another district loss for the Lady Rattlers who are now a game below .500 with a 7-8 record.
Tucumcari stayed within 10 points of Clayton throughout the first quarter. Jamie Jones and Whitney Spinks were hitting some shots off the glass.
Spinks brought Tucumcari within three points of Clayton late in the second quarter with an off-the-glass shot. The Lady Rattlers were continuing a trend of patient offense by passing the ball around looking for a good inside shot.
Jones paved the way for a team-high 16 points. She also got physical on the defensive end, fouling out with three minutes left in the game.
The Lady Rattlers, as in their previous game against Texico, did not want to get into a running game with the more experienced team. The strategy of ball control offense worked well in the first half.
The Tucumcari shooters have not found consistency in their shooting. The Yellow Jackets have that correspondence and methodically hit shot after shot as the second half wore on.
Spinks added 11 points to Jones’ 16. Senior Amanda Tapia hit for nine points. Each of those players have been high scorers at one time or another this season.
The Lady Rattlers will not play again until next Friday when they welcome the Lady Broncos of Floyd to their homecoming game. A total of five regular season games remain.
