The Tucumcari Rattlers gave Coach John Span a birthday present Friday evening— a 62-40 homecoming victory over the Floyd Broncos. Hanging onto a slim lead in the second quarter, the Rattlers began to pull away. The second half turned out to be a cake walk for Tucumcari as they went up by as much as 30 points.
Span said his team got after it on defense in the second half.
“Our defense bothered Floyd a little more in the second half,” Span said. “We were trapping more, getting more pressure on the ball. We were able to pick up our pace off the defensive pressure.”
Rattler Eric Holt finished with 17 points for the game. He drove confidently to the basket a number of times during the game.
“Eric is really coming on strong now,” Span said. “He’s feeling more comfortable shooting the ball. As long as he doesn’t try to do too much he does really well. He is an athlete.”
Holt said a lingering foot injury has become less bothersome.
“I finally feel like I did before,” Holt said. “I’m looking for the ball and not panicking. I do feel more comfortable shooting now.”
Matt Braziel added a team-high 19 points, hitting four three-pointers on the way to frustrate the Broncos. Braziel sank a three at the beginning of the fourth quarter to dampen any hopes the Broncos may have had.
Floyd had the early lead, 12-11 at the end of the first quarter, but Tucumcari’s quickness and relentless defense wore the Broncos down.
The Rattlers host district-foe Santa Rosa Tuesday. Tucumcari will seek revenge for a recent loss to the Lions.
