The Springer Lady Red Devils outlasted Tucumcari 34-30 in Saturday’s game at Rattler Gym. With a minute remaining in the game, Lady Rattler Sam Montano hit a free throw to bring Tucumcari within one point, 31-30.
The Lady Rattlers let some time run off the clock before fouling a Springer player. The Lady Red Devil hit her free throws and Tucumcari could not answer at the other end.
Tucumcari was up by as much as seven points in the second quarter on shots made by Whitney Spinks, Jamie Jones, Jana Kirksey and Montano, but Springer closed to within two points at the half.
It was nip and tuck the rest of the way as the teams exchanged short leads.
Lady Rattler Coach Alicia Trujillo said her team needs to develop a killer instinct.
“We’ve got to learn to kick a team when they’re down,” Trujillo said. “We were up by seven points. We are more likely to help the other team out when they are down.”
Whitney Spinks said she and her teammates lost focus late in the game.
“We lost our heads and we didn’t do what we were told to do,” Spinks said. “We learned a lesson. We can’t go in and just think we can win without playing hard.”
Spinks said not “blocking out” properly is a continuing flaw in her team.
“A lot of times we only get one shot because we are not blocking out,” she said.
Tucumcari hosts district-foe Texico Feb. 15. Varsity games begin after the JV games which start at 4 p.m.
