The Texico Wolverines led from beginning to the end as they cruised to a 58-44 victory at home against Tucumcari.
The Wolverines signaled their intentions early by taking a 6-0 lead off two three-pointers in a row. Texico went on several big runs during the game.
The Rattlers had 20 turnovers in the game and shot only a little above 25 percent from the floor. Texico had only seven turnovers.
Texico had a slim five-point lead at the beginning of the second quarter. By the end of the quarter they were up by 20.
Texico decided not to tease the Rattlers. The Wolverines went on a 7-0 run to start the third quarter. It was a quick end to Tucumcari’s hopes of winning.
Tucumcari narrowed the gap a little in the fourth quarter as Chris McCasland hit a trio of three-pointers, but it was too little too late. McCasland finished with 16 points to lead Rattler scorers.
Anthony Apodaca saw his first varsity action and hit a bucket.
Any possible Rattler road trip to the state tournament will likely have to make its way through Texico. District play begins Monday. The Rattlers must win two games against district opponents to stay alive. So far, the Rattlers have failed to beat any district foe.
Texico has won two games over Tucumcari this season by a combined total of 33 points.
The Rattlers host Clayton Friday in their last regular-season game. Seniors and their parents will be honored at the game.
