It was do or die for the Lady Rattlers at Clayton Monday, but Tucumcari’s offense never came to life as the Lady Yellow Jackets rolled to a 76-30 district tournament victory, ending Tucumcari’s season.
Tucumcari played Clayton a lot closer just a few days earlier giving fans reason to expect another tough fight. A 59-13
Lady Yellow Jacket lead at the end of the first half, however, put to rest any notion of a close, hard-fought battle.
The Lady Rattlers were overwhelmed by Clayton’s full-court press throughout the game. The Tucumcari girls threw bad passes, and were frequently called for traveling. Clayton players stole the ball often.
Things began badly for Tucumcari. The Lady Rattlers scored just three points in the first quarter. Tucumcari outscored Clayton 7-6 in the fourth quarter, but the game was out of reach by then.
The Clayton win leaves Tucumcari with a 7-13 overall record for the 2004-2005 season.
That is six more wins than last season, and the team is still young. Only two players, Amanda Tapia and Reyna Banuelos, will graduate this year.
Season highlights for Tucumcari include two wins over Raton, a team the Lady Rattlers lost to last year; a last-second win over Logan early in the season gave the
Lady Rattlers some steam going into the Route 66 tournament, which they won.
