The Logan Longhorns took care of business Friday night as they beat the Grady Bronchos 70-55 at home to win district four and the right to play the district two runner-up in Albuquerque next Friday.
Longhorn seniors Wes James and J.D. Estrada led the way.
James hit a couple of threes on his way to scoring 20 points, and Estrada made quick moves to the hoop for points in the fourth quarter.
Longhorn Coach Billy Burns said his players came together as a team.
“We had great senior leadership,” Burns said, “and when I subbed, we didn’t miss a beat. I feel we wore Grady down by working the ball inside.”
Burns praised the Bronchos effort.
“They are a well-coached and well-disciplined team,” Burns said. “Their kids played really hard.”
James said he wanted the ball throughout the game.
“I’m a senior and this was my last game at home. I wanted to win,” he said. “Every time I got the ball I wanted to shoot it.”
The Bronchos played the Longhorns evenly early in the game by hitting some three-pointers, but shots by James and post players Jake Abercrombie and Marshall Graham helped the Longhorns pull further ahead.
James nailed a three from the corner late in the first half to give the Longhorns a 39-24 lead at the half.
Logan stayed comfortably ahead throughout the second half, but it wasn’t a walk in the park as players from both teams fought hard for possession. A Logan player had to leave the game for a short time in the second half with a bloody nose.
The game almost failed to materialize as the assigned officials were nowhere to be seen by the 7 p.m. tip-off. By chance, two certified officials were in the stands.
After some discussion both teams’ coaches agreed to play the game with the two off-duty officials calling the game.
The game finally got underway at 8 p.m.
Next Friday’s game will be played at Albuquerque High School. Game time has not been announced.
