The Logan Longhorns assured themselves a spot in the state basketball tournament next week by defeating the Monte Del Sol Dragons 68-63 Friday at Albuquerque High School.
Logan will play either Temple Baptist tonight at 6:30 p.m. for the regional championship.
With the Longhorns up by just three points, J.D. Estrada hit a couple of clutch free throws late in the game to seal the victory.
The Longhorns won without the services of Saul Acosta, who had scored nine points in the district championship game Feb. 25, but was unable to play due to an illness.
Todd May stepped up in a big way in Acosta’s absence by scoring a team-high 17 points. May hit crucial shots late in the fourth quarter to keep the Dragons at bay.
The game was tight early on as both teams fought to a 15-15 tie by the end of the first quarter. Logan went up by six at the half and led consistently until the fourth quarter.
The Dragons breathed fire into their offense by going on a 7-0 run in the final period to tie the game up at 50-50.
Logan’s Estrada responded less than a minute later with the three-pointer that put Logan up for good.
Key Logan players, Drew Perez and Jake Abercrombie, fouled out in the fourth quarter with the game hanging in the balance.
Josh Franco hit two free throws in a row with less than a minute left — and then a desperation foul by the Dragons sent Estrada to the line where he iced the game by sinking two free throws of his own.
