Five members of the Tucumcari High School golf team played in a tournament Monday at New Mexico Military Institute. The Rattlers failed to hit the tournament¹s target of 322. They shot 338 for the day.

Matt Smith shot the team¹s lowest score of 79.

Clay Beevers was next with an 83.

Nick Wiegel shot an 85.

Qasim Badshah finished with a 91, and Brian Lopez ended with a 92.

Rattler Coach Rex Maddaford said any number of the team¹s 17 golfers may qualify for tournaments this season.

³We try to qualify the five players each Thursday before a tournament,² Maddaford said. ³We have four young ladies on the team that come out on a regular basis.²

Maddaford said Badshah, an eighth-grader, almost made a birdie on a 3-par hole at the tournament.

The team will need to hit target scores at least three times this season to make it to the state tournament. Making the target score is referred to as ³earning a leg.²
