Tucumcari High School girls basketball coach Alicia Trujillo announced Thursday that Jamie Jones was named to the all-district first team. Coaches from Texico, Clayton and Santa Rosa selected Jones to the team.
Lady Rattlers Whitney Spinks and Sam Montano were give honorable mention status in the district. Trujillo said Jones did a great job all season.
“Jamie was our leading scorer all year long,” Trujillo said.
“The other coaches said she was tough to defend.”
Jones said she was glad to share honors with her teammates.
“We played more as a team this year,” Jones said. “Whitney Spinks and I have been playing basketball together for about six years and we have played basketball with Sam Montano for several years.”
Jones said she was able to improve her inside game this season.
Working hard after practice is why Montano thinks she got her honorable mention status.
“Some of us stayed after practice and did some three-on-three drills,” Montano said, “During games I took the ball inside more and used the other team1s pressure to play better.”
Trujillo said Montano has become the team1s floor leader. Spinks, a junior, said it was her maturity that won her honorable mention.
“This year I matured a lot as a player,” Spinks said. “I worked a lot better with Jamie, Sam and the other players. Maturity was the key.”
Trujillo will have Jones, Spinks and Montano back next season.
“Texico has lost six players, Santa Rosa has lost six players and Clayton has lost five players,” Trujillo said. “We1ve only lost two.”
Spinks thinks the Lady Rattlers will do well next season.
“I think we will be the best team in the district next year,” Spinks said.
