Red-hot Animas eliminates Logan

BERNALILLO — Logan coach Billy Burns couldn’t help but note the irony after his Longhorns were blitzed out of the Class 1A boys state basketball tournament Wednesday by 3-point-happy Animas.

“It’s funny, but I emphasize getting layups to our kids. ‘Get the layup, get the layup,’ I tell them,” Burns said. “I bet tonight they hit more 3-pointers than we hit layups.”

In fact, Animas tied a state record — and set a new one for the postseason — by drilling 14 3-pointers as the Panthers overwhelmed Logan 88-58 in a quarterfinal contest.

Animas (22-4) started by hitting long-distance shots and never really stopped until the fourth quarter. By that time Animas had a 71-35 lead.

Hector Romo popped in six, Trevor Richins nailed four and Zach Ramirez contributed three treys for the victors.

“We tried different defenses, we tried different schemes. Nothing seemed to work,” Burns said. “They were unreal tonight. They shot the 3 better than any high school team I’ve ever seen shoot the 3. You’ve got to tip your hat to them.

“At least one of them is usually hot. But tonight we had ‘em all hot,” Animas coach Charles Richardson said. “When you have three or four guys all shooting the 3, it adds up pretty quick.”

Drew Perez scored 15 points for Logan while Jake Abercrombie and Todd May added nine apiece. The Longhorns (17-12) won the District 4-1A tournament title and finished second in their regional behind tournament favorite Temple Baptist.

In his first year as the Logan coach, Burns accepted some of the blame for the loss.

“I wasn’t satisfied with the way we played. We didn’t play up to our capabilities,” Burns said. “They finished their shots and we didn’t. You’ve got to take advantage when your opportunites and we didn’t do that tonight.”

Still, Burns had a few special words for his team.

“I told the seniors, ‘Thank you.’ I told the juniors and sophomores that we had a taste,” he said. “Now we need to go home and work harder. Obviously, we can shoot better if these guys can shoot this well. We’ve got to go home and practice a little bit more on being better shooters.”
