Tucumcari Municipal Golf Course was kind to its hometown team.
The Tucumcari High School golf team hosted a tournament Tuesday and hit a combined score of 333, exactly the score needed to win one of three legs necessary to make it to the state tournament.
Rattler Matt Smith earned an individual leg by shooting a 78, the lowest score of the tournament which included teams from Raton and West Las Vegas
Brian Lopez and Nick Wiegel were next with scores of 84, followed by Clay Beevers with an 87, Qisam Badshah with a 92 and Anas Badshah with an 89. Mark Martinez shot an 89.
For the girls, Olivia Mitchell finished third in the tournament with a score of 112. Maria Garcia shot a 121 and Caitlyn Romero hit a 129.
Rattler Coach Rex Maddaford said players from other teams were impressed with the course’s conditions.
“The golf gods smiled upon us,” Maddaford said. “The other players hadn’t seen good weather like this in a while and our course is in such good shape.”
