Rattler track teams win prestige at Dexter

The Tucumcari High School boys track team won a 17-team track meet Friday at Dexter. They finished with a score of 89.5, 23 points ahead of the next closest team, Capitan.

Rattler Nemi Salvador was the high-point individual, scoring 21.5 points Salvador finished first in the triple jump with a distance of 39 feet, 10.5 inches. He finished second in the long jump at 19 feet, 10 inches. Salvador also ran with the first-place 1600-meter relay team, Eric Holt, Austin Sellers and Steven Taylor, that finished with a time of 3:46.21.

Chris McCasland qualified for the state meet by winning the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.02 seconds. He also took first in the high jump with a leap of six feet four and a half inches.

The Rattler 800-meter relay team, McCasland, Nathan McDonald, Eric Holt and Justin Benavidez, came in first with a state-qualifying time of 1:34.59.

McDonald was second in the javelin throw with a distance of 160 feet eight inches which qualified him for state in that event.

Stephen Quintana finished fourth in the discus and fifth in the shot put.

The Lady Rattlers finished fourth at Dexter with a team score of 46. Jamie Jones qualified for state by winning the discus competition with a toss of 107 feet, three and 3/4 inches. Andrea Garcia finished fourth in the discus and Sam Montano finished fifth.

Garcia finished fifth in the shot put. Jones also took first in the javelin with a throw of 98 feet, 10 inches.

The 800-meter relay team, Whitney Spinks, Jocelyn Debord, T’Shawna Span and Kaitlin Lopez, finished fourth with a time of 2:00.58. Cydnie Rich, Amanda Tapia, Brandi Arenas and Theresa Chacon contributed to fifth-place finishes in team relay events.
