The Tucumcari Rattlers (2-1) survived third and fifth-inning rallies by the San Jon Coyotes (1-1) to win 8-5 Friday at the San Jon Invite. Coach Anthony Alarcon liked the improvement in his team’s hitting.
“We’re hitting better throughout the lineup,” Alarcon said. “The bottom of our lineup is hitting better.”
In the top of the third inning, John Sewell, Matt Braziel and
Joe Hurley loaded up the bases for Drew White who then hit a two-run double. Matt Garcia followed with an RBI-single.
Andre Debord and D. J. Martinez also hit singles and the Rattlers went up 8-0.
San Jon’s Jonathan Brashear responded in the bottom of the third inning with a two-run triple. Brashear was also key in the fifth inning as he hit an RBI-single.
San Jon left two on base in the sixth inning and could not muster any more offense. Coyote Coach Waymond Ragland said team hitting must improve.
“We left two many guys on base,” Ragland said, “but for our second game we’re not doing too bad.”
Braziel was starting pitcher for the Rattlers and Trey Rusk for San Jon. Both pitchers failed to pitch the entire game on a cold afternoon.
San Jon defeated Elida 16-6 earlier in the day. Weather permitting, both San Jon and Tucumcari will each play two games today.
