The Tucumcari Municipal Golf Course is hosting a tournament Sunday to benefit the Tucumcari High School golf team. About 40 golfers have already signed up and the course’s golf pro Howie Tucker said he welcomes more participants.
“It will be an 18-hole tournament with a four-person scramble,” Tucker said. “Each player must use their tee shot at least three times.”
Tucker said the $25 of the $30 fee will go directly to the high school golf team, and $5 of each admission will go to gift certificates winners can use at the course’s pro shop.
We will also raffle a driver,” Tucker said. “The clubhouse will be open and I imagine some members will invite guests inside.”
Tucker said the Tucumcari High School golf team will participate in the tournament.
Rattler golf coach Rex Maddaford said the annual tournament has been postponed twice already due to bad weather.
“Hopefully third time is a charm” Maddaford said. “It’s supposed to be good weather this Sunday.”
Maddaford said the golf team is looking to raise money for equipment and overnight stays for upcoming tournaments.
“We’re trying to build a base of funds to keep the kids equipped,” he said. “Also if we make it to the state tournament in Grants, that will be quite an expense.”
City Manager Richard Primrose will be teaming up with friends at the tournament.
“It’s just a fun day to play golf and benefit the high school golf team,” Primrose said. “Most of the local golfers come out and support junior golf.”
