Local youth take FFA awards

A number of San Jon High School and Logan High School students placed at the state Future Farmers of America (FFA) convention June 6-9 at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, according to a San Jon FFA chapter press release and a New Mexico State University press release.
In the state ag marketing competion a team consisting of Jennifer Choate, Kristina Marshall and Kateri Bowe placed second and qualified to compete in the national FFA convention in October in Louisville, Ky.
Choate also placed second in the state job interview competition.
Kelly Goodgame won the microbiology competition and Tyce Foster placed first in the environmental division. Both will head on to the national convention in October.
Logan High School student Denton Dowell was the high-point individual in livestock judging and also won the public speaking contest at the state FFA convention, according to New Mexico State University press release.
Dowell will head to the national FFA convention with fellow members of the Logan dairy team, Ashlee Burns, Shawnee Muncy and Drew Perez. The Logan dairy team took first in the state competition.
Also, the Logan poultry team — Jessica Bell, Adriana Chavez, Daniel Acosta and Bretta Smith — won the state competition and will comptete at the national convention.
