A parade through the streets of Logan on Saturday will kick off this weekend’s Fourth of July festivities in Logan and at Ute Lake State Park. A free barbecue and “bean feed” Saturday at the north entrance to the park, followed by fireworks at dusk at the park’s Windy Point entrance, should have everyone geared up for a dance at 9 p.m. at the Logan Roping Arena.
Logan/Ute Lake Chamber of Commerce member Bucky Stone said about 20 people are working to prepare for Saturday’s events.
“We’ve added a volleyball tournament put on by the Logan schools cheerleaders,” Stone said. “ As usual, we’ll be cooking beef brisket in a big covered pit.”
Stone said everything is ready to go.
“We’re raffling off $11,000 in merchant cash that can be used at local businesses in Logan and Tucumcari. The raffle tickets cost $20. That’s down from $25 last year,” Stone said.
A press release from New Mexico State Parks said campers should make reservations ahead of time if they want a spot at the campgrounds.
“With a recent increase in water levels, Ute Lake is expected to be at 88 percent capacity for the weekend,” the press release stated.
Last year’s barbecue and bean feed attracted people from all over. When the first plate of beef and beans was served the line of people waiting for a plate stretched as far as the eye could see.
This is Stone’s first year as an organizer for the Fourth of July weekend events.
“I like all the activity, all the hustle and bustle,” he said.
All events are free of charge, but normal camping rates apply at the park.
