Who: Rosalyn Nguyen
She’s a Tucumcari native, daughter of Thanh Van Nguyen and Jan (Huong) Nguyen, and graduate student at the University of New Mexico.
What that means: Lots of stuff, since the Board of Regents is a powerful governing body of the university with appointments made by the governor, whom Nguyen got to meet during a preliminary interview. Only the fifth student regent in the school’s history, Nguyen, 24, provides the student perspective to the board and serves as liaison between students, staff, faculty and lawmakers.
Her favorite part of being a regent: “Being able to make a difference as a student to a university that is the flagship institution of the state by providing a first-hand account of what’s going on on campus to the board.”
Claim to fame: Which one? Prior to her Board of Regents appointment and her current state of simultaneously pursuing a law degree and a master’s in business, Nguyen was a Regent’s Scholar in her undergrad days at UNM, who graduated with honors and a bachelor’s degree in business administration. She also said, thanks to Mom, she can make a killer egg roll.
Another claim to fame: Among her awards, her studies, her board position, her Asian cooking, her trip to London this summer to study international business law at Queen Mary Law School, her family, her friends and her snow skiing weekends, Nguyen actually finds time to sleep.
