Eric Holt rushed for 231 yards and scored six touchdowns as Tucumcari cruised to a 62-6 win over Crownpoint on Friday.
With a Rattler Stadium crowd cheering them on, the Rattlers led by 20 points before Crownpoint scored and were never challenged.
Holt, an all-state player a year ago, scored rushing touchdowns from 30, 7, 61, 15 and 69 yards out. He also returned an interception for a touchdown for the second week in a row. Holt’s apparent 65-yard touchdown romp in the second quarter was called back for a penalty.
“The boys came well-prepared for tonight’s football game,” Tucumcari Coach Dub Smith said. “We did what we wanted to do, and the score is indicative of that.”
Smith said Friday’s game was against a better team than last Saturday when the Rattlers crushed Mora 61-0.
“Every game is a stepping stone to get better,” Smith said. “It’s all about quality.”
Assistant Coach Wayne Ferguson said he felt good about Friday night’s game as well. “We always like to play in front of our hometown,” he said. “It gives us huge confidence.”
Holt said the Rattlers must continue to improve as the season continues, but he was pleased with Friday’s performance.
“Crownpoint has a good starting lineup, and had nice plays. It’s all about playing with heart,” Holt said.
Holt said he feels good about the Rattlers’ future this season.
“We’re going for state,” he said. “As long as we can keep it up, we’ll have no problems.”
