Regarding the editorial “… U.N. itself needs reform, accountability”:
This has the old John Birch view of the United Nations. It refers to John Bolton as a knight in shining armor sent to reform the U.N.
Here is what John Bolton did in his first move at the U.N.: He submitted 750 changes to a reform blueprint that was nearly complete and was to be submitted to the U.N. on Sept. 14. All nations, including the U.S., had cooperatively worked on it. The document was 35 pages with 750 changes!
His changes erase all mention of treaties that the U.S. did not embrace, erase the contribution goal of each developed nation to fight world poverty, take out language that urges the Security Council members to refrain blocking action to end genocide. He could foul up a one-car parade. Some diplomat.
Reforms are needed, there are inefficiencies and corruption — none of which are exclusive to the U.N., Katrina ring a bell? The editorial states that Kofi Annan should resign, but don’t expect accountability.
The editorial states that the U.N. is an association of governments, most of which are adept at fleecing their taxpayers (a reqired point in all conservative propaganda). Oliver Wendel Holmes once said “paying taxes is part of the responsibility of living in a civilized society.”
Try visualizing living in a world without government. Civilized society would not exist.
