A Louisiana man died early Monday morning in a one-vehicle rollover about 35 miles west of Tucumari on Interstate 40.
Officials said a gray, 1994 van driven by James Williams was traveling westbound on I-40 when the rear tire on the passenger side broke, causing the tire and hub to shoot off the vehicle.
The van left the roadway on the north shoulder, where the driver tried to steer back on to the road before entering into a skid and crossing both lanes of traffic and the south shoulder, a state police report said.
When the van struck the soft dirt of the median, it overturned twice and came to rest on its passenger side, pinning passenger Derrick Freeman beneath the wreck.
Freeman died about 7 a.m. at the scene, officials said.
Police said none of the other 11 individuals on board suffered life-threatening injuries. All 12 are from Louisiana.
