The varsity Tucumcari Lady Rattlers faced off to the Clayton Jackettes Saturday for a AA district volleyball game, losing 0-3. It was a tough beat, said Head Coach Alicia Trujillo. “We have a lot more potential (than we showed). We did just fine in the beginning, but just lost our momentum.”
Tucumcari started off well in the first round by keeping the Jackettes at bay, but ended up just missing the win, finishing 25-22. The second and third rounds were owned by Clayton, with both rounds finishing up at 25-18.
Trujillo said while the Jackettes are a good team and played well, Tucumcari should have easily beat them. “We’re a much better team than how we played Saturday.”
She also stated there were good points to the game as well as bad. “We can hit the ball very hard and play well together as a team…unfortunately we just weren’t passing the ball or communicating as well as we should have.”
Tucumcari hasn’t won a game since stomping House 3-0 while competing in the Roy Tournament in August. In the face of their losing streak, Trujillo said their new goal is to practice hard this week and fix the mistakes they made Saturday, as well as the mistakes made in the past. As far as their goals for the season, Trujillo said she wants her ladies to excel beyond district tournaments and into regional.
“Right now I think we’re playing below our level, but we can always improve. It’s a week until our next game, and we’ll be ready for the challenge,” Trujillo said.
The Lady Rattlers — who are currently 4-7 — will be playing in the Millrace Tournament Saturday against San Jon, who the Ladies feel are a good challenge. Said Trujillo, “San Jon is a scrappy, good team. We’ve beat them before, but we’re always ready for the competition.”
