Rattlers primed for Homecoming with the Demons

By Paul Lyon: QCS

Friday night marks homecoming and the Tucumcari Rattlers are celebrating by taking on the Dexter Demons (2-4). Undefeated thus far, the Rattlers (6-0) are primed to keep it that way, according to Coach Dub Smith.

“The Demons are ranked sixth in AA…that means they must be a skilled team,” said Smith. “They’ve got good running backs and a good quarterback, so we’re going to be ready.”

Dexter took a walloping Friday when they played Santa Rosa, losing 42-0, but Smith said the Rattlers don’t think they’ll be allowed a free game. “Dexter can knock you out if your not careful. We don’t make the mistake of thinking all the teams we play are the same. We’re heading into this prepared and set for a challenge.” Smith said.

Not only Smith is taking care to ensure success, he said, but all the people involved in making the Tucumcari team the best work hard to get the boys ready.

“Coach Span, Ferguson, Hittison, Dunlap…everyone is trying their best to win each week, and I think it shows when we do win. All these ingredients make for a great football program,” Smith said.

One of the key elements to the Rattlers being prepared, Smith said, is watching a recording after each of their performances. All the players and coaches gather around a TV and study the plays and moves of the other team, as well as themselves, to look for any mistakes and to see what they did right.

“Friday will be a good shootout. Dexter has a good backline and their coach, Tim Fuller, knows how to run a football team,” Smith said. “Everyone will see a good ballgame for homecoming, and we’re looking forward to it.”
