Rattlers win seventh straight

In a mere 18 seconds the Tucumcari Rattlers — more specifically Eric Holt — were off and running.

Eric Holt dashed 70 yards for a touchdown — his first of four on the night — as Tucumcari beat Dexter 56-18 Friday in front of a homecoming crowd.

With its latest lopsided win, the Rattlers (7-0) take an unbeaten record and a No. 1 state ranking into next week’s start of district play.

Holt added scoring runs of 2, 81, and 48 yards as Tucumcari built a 56-6 lead through three quarters.

Tucumcari assistant coach John Span said the starting boys did a great job.

“The kids had a great start and did a great job,” Span said. He was quick to talk about Tucumcari’s scout team — the players that trot out to the field during the fourth quarter. “A lot of the time they don’t get too much recognition. They’re kind of behind the scenes, but still very valuable to the team.”

On the game overall, Span said: “We were able to do what we wanted on both sides of the ball. Tonight was one of those nights that just clicked.”

Dexter (2-5) scored twice in the fourth quarter against the Rattlers’ reserves.

In addition to Holt, Josh Benavidez ran for 35 yards to score, with Marc Salas, Nathan McDonald and Matt Smith all making it into the end zone for Tucumcari.

Anas Badshaw was 7 of 7 on extra points.

The Rattlers finished with 445 yards, including the game with 371 on the ground.

Along with those numbers, Tucumcari also added another fact: No penalties were called against the Rattlers during the game, a first for the season. The Demons had three flags for 25 penalty yards.
