Friday will mark the beginning of the district games with the state’s top team — the undefeated Rattlers — facing the
Clayton Yellowjackets, currently 4-3. Last week the Rattlers dealt a blow to the Dexter Demons (2-5), beating them 56-18 for a Tucumcari High School homecoming crowd.
This week, it’s practice as usual for the Rattlers football team, who are hard at work after school every day preparing for Friday’s game when they will have to travel to Clayton.
Coach Dub Smith said the team won’t be doing anything very different as far as practice goes. “We’ll just try to stop what Clayton does best, and I’m sure they’ll do the same,” Smith said.
Speaking of Clayton, Smith said they have a good, strong tradition of football, and that goes a long way for the team.
When the Rattlers play the Yellowjackets, both teams will be 0-0 in the district games, which means a dead heat for victory.
“The loser of this game will probably end up going home, so we have to be able to beat their lineups. Clayton runs well and throws well, and mixes their plays well. So it’ll be a big game,” Smith said.
The Rattlers are hoping to see a big crowd, Smith said, especially for the district games. “It’ll be a great night for football.”
To date, Tucumcari has earned over 350 points for the season and only given away 32 to opposing teams.
