Rattlers blank Clayton in district opener

CLAYTON — The first district game of the season for the Tucumcari Rattlers was a success as they shut out the Clayton Yellowjackets 63-0 and maintained their top ranking in Class 2A.

It was up to Josh Benavidez, Adrian Jones and the rest of the team to make sure the Rattlers (8-0) stayed on top as Eric Holt and Drew White were both injured in the second quarter.

Benavidez scored three times and Jones twice.
Holt scored three times in the first and second quarters, helping give the Rattlers a 49-0 lead at halftime and a running clock for the second half.

Tucumcari finished with 346 yards, including 218 yards on the ground. Benvavidez threw for 128 yards and two touchdowns.

Meanwhile, the Rattlers defense held the Yellowjackets (4-4, 0-1) to 94 yards and intercepted six passes.
and high on penalties with 10 for 74 yards. On the upside, they did not manage to fumble and intercepted six Clayton passes.
