This week introduces the Tucumcari Rattlers’ (8-0) biggest challenge in the 2005-06 season so far — the Santa Rosa Lions (7-0). Both teams have survived unscathed and will be going head to head Friday at the Tucumcari home field. This will be the second district game for the Rattlers, after bashing the Clayton Yellowjackets 63-0.
Santa Rosa is currently second in state behind the Rattlers and Coach Dub Smith, as always, said Tucumcari will be practicing their hearts out for this game.
“Santa Rosa has an old-fashioned single-wing offense, and we’ll have to adjust our defense for it,” said Smith. In addition to adjustments, the Rattlers’ offense and defense will need to take control of time and the football. “This will be a huge game and we’re expecting a tough battle…we’ve risen to the occasion.”
Smith said, “We (Santa Rosa and Tucumcari) match up very well this season…the scores are similar, and we’ve played the same teams. It may come down to the special teams, but when we play Santa Rosa it’s always a big sportsmanship rivalry.”
In an update, Eric Holt will probably not be playing Friday due to an injury sustained during last week’s game. While the possibility of Holt not playing is a setback, Smith said the team is preparing extra just in case. Drew White, who was also injured, will be playing Friday.
Expecting a big crowd, Smith wants to make sure everyone comes extra early so Rattler fans can get a seat. Also, tickets are being presold at the high school right now so people won’t be without a ticket for the game.
