Rattlers demolish Class 3A Spartans

Playoff-bound Tucumcari capped off the regular-season by blowing past Bernalillo 46-9 Friday in a non-district contest.
Senior Marc Salas rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns and Justin Benavidas punctuated a dominating first quarter by returning a fumble 37 yards for a score as Tucumcari rebounded from its first loss of the season.

By finishing second behind unbeaten Santa Rosa in District 2-2A, the Rattlers (9-1) earned a state playoff berth. An NMAA seeding meeting is being held today to determined first-round matchups.

Josh Benavidez added 99 yards passing for Tucumcari, which finished with 386 yards. Meanwhile, the Class 3A Spartans, who didn’t score until the midway through the fourth quarter, were limited to 145.

Salas scored on runs of 27 and 31 yards in the first half while posting his first 100-yard rushing game. Sophomore D.J. Martinez added a pair of rushing TDs for the Rattlers while Kyle Sims was on the receiving end of Benavidez’ 36-yard scoring toss.

Aaron Trujillo was a bright spot for Bernalillo (0-8) with a 30-yard FG and an 87-yard TD catch.
