Tucumcari, seeded third, faces sixth-seeded Crownpoint at Gallup on Friday at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the 2005 Class AA State Football Championship tournament.

The winner of the Tucumcari-Crownpoint match will play the winner of the Eunice-Lordsburg game next week in the semifinals.

“If we win against Crownpoint Friday, we will be guaranteed a home game in Tucumcari next weekend,” Head Coach Dub Smith said, adding Crownpoint has won eight straight games since the Rattlers beat them early in the season.

Assistant Coach Wayne Ferguson said he is trying to get the players to get it out of their minds how bad they beat Crownpoint the last time.

“There’s no next week to recover if we lose this one — just come in and turn in their suits,” Ferguson said.

Smith added, “Crownpoint has momentum and confidence, and we will need to have good offense and good defense to win.”

Smith praised Crownpoint’s quarterback and receivers and said their fullback has 1400 yards rushing so far this season.

The Rattlers have only lost one game this season and that was a close game with the first-seeded Santa Rosa Lions.
