Rattlers and Lady Rattlers battle with county rivals

By Albert Trujillo

With four basketball games on the slate Saturday, it was a night of sweat and heart.

The evening began with the junior varsity girls as Tucumcari’s Lady Rattlers held off Logan’s Longhorns despite losing two starters to foul trouble by the score of 47 to 33.

Other JV action had the boys going head to head. This game was the spark to the barn burning. The first quarter ended with the Longhorns leading the Rattlers 20-17.

This game had numerous lead changes and, at the end of regulation, the score was tied at 60. In overtime, Logan was able to hold off the Rattlers despite the 32 point effort by freshman Aric Trujillo. Final tally was Logan 67 Tucumcari 64.
With the Lady Rattlers Varsity girls fresh off a victory over the San Jon Coyotes, their next foe would be the Lady Horns of Logan. The ladies kept the flames high on the barn burning as the Lady Rattlers led 11-6 at the end of the first quarter. The next three quarters were just as action-packed, as Logan used a full court press and the shooting abilities of Raynee Rocker and Delani Hazen to pull within three points in the final quarter.

The Lady Rattlers were able to hold off the Horns with the strong inside play of Brandi Arenas and two critical free throws in the final minute by freshman Kadi Powers to overcome Logan 39-36.

Boys varsity wrapped up with the final game of the evening. The first quarter ended 13-11 with the Rattlers on top. The game, being fit for the horse races, had both teams running and gunning to the intermission with the Rattlers leading 27-24.

The second half was a replica of the first with both teams fighting hard. Logan was able to keep the game close, down 45-41 going into the final period.

The fourth quarter saw the visiting Horns outscoring the host Rattlers 16-12, bringing the end of regulation to a 57-57 tie.

In overtime, Tucumcari could not hold off Logan as the Horns scored 10 points to the Rattlers 7. Logan’s Jake Abercrombie led all scorers with 25 points in defeating the Rattlers in this barn burner. Drew Perez scored a total of 16. Final score was Logan 67 to Tucumcari’s 64.

Next up is the Rattlers hosting the Route 66 tournament this weekend, running Thursday through Saturday in the “Snake Pit.” Lady Rattlers kick off the tournament at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Tournament results will be published in next Wednesday’s issue of the QCS.
