Who: Diana Beck, longtime Tucumcari resident, supporter and caretaker who said she shocked the nation – or at least local residents – when she retired in July.
Claims to fame: Too lengthy to include them all, Beck’s latest award came from the Altrusa club as Retired Woman of the Year. In her introduction, the group listed Beck’s long career as a registered nurse, director of the Home Health Agency, member of the Quay County Extension Club where she began a hospice-like service which ended up as Helping Hands Hospice where she served as RN and administrator for a decade until her July retirement.
Oh yes, Beck and her husband will also be celebrating 50 years of marriage next year, perhaps with her two daughters, one son, two grandsons and one granddaughter. This humble woman, who is always quick to give credit to others rather than herself, has always found time to work on her art. She crafts ceramic, sews and quilts and has been a regular vendor at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta for nearly 25 years.
And what does Beck have to say about all this: In her usual form, rather than taking a much-deserved bow, she right away supports Altrusa, encouraging others to join so “They could have the friendships like I found here.”
