EPAC tourney comes to San Jon

Perhaps highest on the New Year’s resolution list for San Jon is to be great hosts for the upcoming Eastern Plains Athletic Conference (EPAC) Basketball Tournament, where many teams from the eastern side of New Mexico will be competing.

The tournament runs Tuesday through Saturday, with the first three days of games held in San Jon gymnasiums and the final two days in Portales’ Greyhound Arena.

Teams from Logan and House are expected at EPAC while Tucumcari boys and girls will be out of town at invitationals in Santa Rosa and Albuquerque, respectively.

San Jon student JaTawn Slutz said EPAC is sure to be extra special as the Coyotes have a brand new gymnasium, one they dub the Ed Gym, named in honor of former Principal and Coach Ed Lee. Many have also helped prepare.

“This year Mr. (Craig) Stockton and many people within the school worked very hard in order for San Jon to host the EPAC Basketball Tournament,” Slutz said.

She also pointed out spectators will be raring to go as the Coyote’s concession stand is under new management, operated by the sports and activities sponsors with at least two adult parents helping per stand with concession.

Slutz said this not only means speedy service, but new items were added to the usual menu – like popcorn, ice cream, chicken strip baskets, cheese sticks and pizza.

“You will be surprised at the quality of the food. Best yet,” Slutz said.

Organizations involved with the stands include the Science Club, Future Farmers of America and Business Professionals Association; the sports include football, volleyball, basketball, track and baseball, with proceeds from food sales going to support San Jon teams.

To make the tournament even better, Slutz said, volunteers are needed for the event. Anyone interested can call Stacy Wooten at 576-2466.
