Friday’s night full of basketball featured the first district game for Tucumcari against the Lions.
As Santa Rosa visited the “Snake Pit,” the first game of the evening was the junior varsity girls.
Tucumcari held a 10 point lead at halftime 21-11 and at the end of the third quarter led 38-17.
But the Lions did not quit, fighting hard to cut the Lady Rattlers lead down to 9 points. Final score Tucumcari 42 Santa Rosa 33.
Leading the Lady Rattlers were Kadi Powers and Ashley Trujillo with 10 points each, Tanisha Trujillo led the Lady Lions with 8 points.
Following the JV girls were the JV boys in a game of “run and gun.” Santa Rosa led at halftime 36-28.
In the third quarter the Rattlers were able to cut the Lions lead to 44-41. The Rattlers could not convert from the charity line going 4 of 15.
“You can’t win many games shooting like that from the line,” said Rattler Coach Gary Hittson. Final score was Lions 57 to the Rattlers 48.
Manuel Martinez led the Rattlers with 14 points, while Muniz led the Lions with 19 points.
The third game had the varsity girls going head to head, with a first quarter score of Lady Rattlers 9 and Lady Lions 12.
Second quarter action had the Lions beginning to pull away, with a halftime score of the Lions 27 to the Lady Rattlers 15.
Santa Rosa continued pressuring the Lady Rattlers in the second half and turnovers were the difference. The final score was Lady Lions 67 and Lady Rattlers 27.
Brandi Arenas led the Lady Rattlers with 10 points and Britana Campos led the Lady Lions with 24 points.
Final game of the night had the varsity boys battling for their first district win. Santa Rosa’s pressure defense and hot hands kept the Rattlers at bay leading 31-14 at intermission.
The Lions kept the hot hand in the second half, draining 3’s and using a strong inside game to finish off the Rattlers.
Final score was Santa Rosa 58 to Tucumcari’s 36.
Santa Rosa’s Joey Urban led all scorers with 23 points and Nathan McDonald led the Rattlers with 13 points.
The Rattlers and Lady Rattlers were dealt their first district loss of the season and will be in action tonight in Fort Sumner.
