Hunters can apply for public lands license

New Mexico hunters have until April 8 to apply for 2006-2007 public-land deer, elk, antelope, ibex, javelina and bighorn sheep licenses.

The 2006 deer season will be the second in which hunters must enter a public drawing to be eligible to hunt on public lands.

Applications can be submitted via the Department of Game and Fish Web site at

www.wildlife.state.nm.us

All applications must be either postmarked or received through the Department Web site by midnight April 8.

State police stepping up patrols

Officers of the New Mexico State Police will be conducting Selected Traffice Enforcement Program (STEP) patrols on Interstate 40 in Quay County throughout the spring. Emphasis will be plaed on speed, seatbelt/child restraint and DWI.

The New Mexico State Police are asking motorists to drive safely and buckle up.

Senator seeks summer interns

U.S. Sen.Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., encouraged students to apply for a summer internship in his Washington office. The application deadline is March 31. The internships are open to college and university undergraduate students who attend school in New Mexico or attend school in the state.

The internship program is designed to educate New Mexico students about the political process and to allow them to gain experience in the daily operations of a U.S. Senate office. Summer interns will work five 40-hour weeks in Bingaman’s Capitol Hill office during one of two sessions.

The first session is May 30 through June 30, and the second is July 3 through Aug. 4.

Leten lunches come to local churches

To celebrate the Lenten season, Tucumcari’s Ministry of Hope is sponsoring a series of Wednesday lunches, starting March 15 at St. Anne’s Church.

Each week, a different church will host the lunches, which will run from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Lenten season is the period from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday. There will be five lunches before Easter Sunday, which falls on April 16. Future Lenten lunches will be listed in Calendar section of the Quay County Sun.
