Special to the QCS
There will be a new sound coming from the annual Cinco de Mayo celebration held at Mesalands Community College this year. The musical group Amistad has been selected to provide the live entertainment.
“We like the group’s wide variety of musical selections, and feel they will offer something for just about everyone in attendance,” said the event co-organizer, John Yearout, director of public relations at Mesalands.
Amistad plays music that includes Northern New Mexico Spanish Music, Rock’n’Roll Oldies, and Country Western. The band is a three-time award winner by the New Mexico Hispano Music Association and the New Mexico Entertainers Association for Instrumental Song of the Year. They have also been nominated for the categories of Traditional Song of the Year, Corrido Song of the Year, and Original Song of the Year. The group won Instrumental Song of the Year in 2005 for their song, “Polka Amistad.”
