Superintendent put on paid leave by board

Tucumcari Schools Superintendent William Reents, who has been with the school system nearly four years, was placed on paid administrative leave during Tuesday’s special meeting of the Tucumcari Schools Board of Education.

School board members declined comment after the meeting on why Reents was placed on leave.

The board met in executive session for 90 minutes before taking action on the matter. School board member A.J. Williams was the only one to speak during the meeting, saying she was doing what she felt was in the best interest of the district.

The board voted 5-0 to place Reents on leave.

Aaron McKinney, the assistant superintendent, has been named acting superintendent until further action is taken. He will be paid monthly on a pay scale equal to $90,000 annually.

Reents was not present at the board meeting and did not respond to telephone messages left at his home Tuesday night.

Reents has been with Tucumcari schools since July 2002, when he replaced the retiring Frank Jimenez. He has overseen the school system during its change to a four-day school week over the 2005-06 academic year.

Reents was one of five candidates for the superintendent position with Clovis Municipal Schools before Rhonda Seidenwurm of Las Cruces was hired for that job last year.
