Riding the rails again?

By Chelle Delaney: Quay County Sun

Friday was just the beginning. Over the next few months the Railrunner Express trains (bearing a Roadrunner on their sides) will begin to take over the job of getting commuters to and from their jobs in Albuquerque.

Fifty years ago, the interstate highways seemed a great idea. Today with oil heading toward $80 a barrel and gasoline pumping out at $3 and more a gallon, riding the rails seems like a great idea.

And by using less gas, the Railrunner riders reduce air pollution. Yes, riding the rails is a great idea. Again.

What goes around comes around.

We’ve had a railroad right here in Tucumcari for almost a hundred years.

And before that was the horse. Could it be that horses and wagons and stage coaches will make a comeback, too?

Well, for now, let’s just be glad that people (not just freight) are riding the rails again. Before the automobile, before the highways, people managed to get around by train. Now they’re doing it again.

And they may do even more of it. There are plans underway for an Interstate Rail System!

We might even be able to go by rail to Albuquerque, Santa Fe, or even Clovis to do some of that shopping. Or maybe even Texas, Colorado, Arizona. Just like people used to do.
