Camaraderie drives Rattlers to scramble

By Thomas Garcia

Rattlers from classes past came together to play golf for the annual Rattler Reunion Scramble at Tucumcari’s Municipal Golf Course beginning on Friday and continuing today.
“I really enjoy the annual Scramble,” said Fred Porter of Tucumcari.

Teeing off on hole one were long-time friends and classmates Rene Maciel of Waco, Jamie Stephenson of Edmund, Okla., Mark Morland of Denver and Jay Rook of Houston.

They were part of the 1974 District champion and state runner-up team.

“We used to spend a lot of time on this course as kids,” said Stephenson.

Maciel said, “We grew up playing golf our here in our younger years. It’s nice to come back out here and play again for the reunion with old friends.”

“This is quiet an experience. Students of all ages coming back to Tucumcari for the reunion and to play some golf. Most of these people spent a lot of time on this golf course while they were students at Tucumcari High School and it’s always good to have them come back and play again,” said Howie Tucker, PGA, Tucumcari golf professional.

Tucker also said, “I’d like to see a lot more younger people get involved with golf. There are a lot of scholarships out there for golf students.

“At our last tournament, the Vic Breen Partnership, we raised enough money to give two Tucumcari students scholarships versus one (in previous years). Those students were Drew Hale and Clay Beevers.”
