The 2A Rattlers will face off against the 3A Rams at 7 p.m. Friday night in Portales.
Both teams have one win coming into Friday, but the Rattlers are coming off of a win.
Tucumcari held visiting Loving to three first downs, while managing 22 first downs on offense en route to a 39-0 win.
Four different Rattlers rushed for touchdowns against the Falcons. Senior Brian Lopez had three touchdowns, senior Matt Smith also scored and juniors Andre Debord and Daniel Kampfer each had a touchdown.
The points won’t come so easy against the Class 3A Rams (1-3), who have allowed 34 points in three games against New Mexico teams — 13 to defending 3A champ Robertson, a shutout against Raton and 21 in a loss to Class 4A Goddard on Friday.
“Portales is going to be a good test for us,” Rattlers Coach Dub Smith said of the Rams, who lost 21-13. “They played well last week. They had two touchdowns that were called back and they very well could have won that game. They have improved a lot since the start of the season.
“I’d compare them with Albuquerque Academy and Capital right now. I feel our defense and offense are going to match up well against them. It’s going to be a good game this Friday and were going to come out and play some good football.”
Portales coach Andy Correll is upbeat about the Rams’ play of late, even with the recent loss.
“Our offensive line had their best game last week despite the loss,” Correll said, noting that senior runningback Eric Segovia had 18 rushes for 111 yards.
“Tucumcari has a great coaching staff and physical team,” Correll said. “They have had a tough schedule this season just like us. The game against the Rattlers is going to be a good one and we need to come out strong and execute in the game.”
