Junior High Rattlers beat Foxes

The junior high Tucumcari Rattlers beat the Fort Sumner Foxes 34-16 Saturday night at Fort Sumner.

Coach Eddie Encinias said, “Fort Sumner was our toughest game so far. They played some ninth graders and came out hitting hard. They hit us harder than Texico I feel.”

In Saturday’s game, Rattlers running back Jake Martinez carried 13 times for 107 yards and one touchdown .

Rattlers lineman A.J. McElroy carried eight times for 78 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback George Montano also had a  rushing touchdown. The Rattlers gained 281 yards to the Foxes’ 208 yards and would only punt once during the game.

Coach Brian Dunlap said, “Fort Sumner was a real physical team. They came out hitting hard but our team responded well to that and I’m proud of how they stepped up.”

The junior high Rattlers will play Clayton at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday in Clayton. It was scheduled to be a home game but has been moved to Clayton.
