Gary Salazar, a former principal of Tucumcari High School, will become on Jan. 3, the new superintendent of San Jon Schools, said Bill Coker, interim superintendent of San Jon.

There are about 150 students in grades pre-K through 12.

Salazar is currently the principal at Capitan High School. Salazar is also the husband of Tucumcari Elementary School principal Teresa Salazar.

San Jon Schools called on Coker and coaxed him out of retirement when the school system lost its superintendent at the beginning of this school year, Coker said.

Coker served his first tour as superintendent in 1988 at San Jon, he said.

“It’s been great being here,” Coker said. “I’ve enjoyed seeing the students. It’s good to be here again and see everyone again.”

Initially, it was hard he said because his wife, Wanda, had to remain in Silver City until the family could arrange to get other partners in to manage their RV park, Mountain Spirit, in Silver City.

Coker also has been superintendent at Tucumcari, Deming and Animas.
“Retirement has been great, and I’m going back,” he said.

In retirement, the Cokers divide their time between Silver City and Kino Bay, Mexico, Coker said.
